Squad Solutions – Goalkeeper

The Transfer Room’s @Callumsanderson looks at Liverpool’s goalkeeping options for next season in the first installment of Squad Solutions.

An objective perspective on the current squad and what positions need to be addressed and bolstered before Liverpool head into the 2019/2020 season.

As the saying goes, behind every great man is a great woman and behind every great footballer, is a great backup. OK, that last one was made up but you get the notion.

Great sides are often judged on how good their squad is. More specifically, how good are the players in reserve in case of rotation?

This is what makes the summer transfer window so difficult in theory. Liverpool have a great Starting XI, but there are positions that they lack depth in. If Liverpool are to continue their growth towards being consistent title challengers then it’s not just a case of having quantity. Quality is required too.

The current situation

Without doubt, Alisson will continue to remain Liverpool’s No. 1 unless something crazy occurs. Any goalkeeper we bring in will know that they will be playing a limited number of games unless Alisson gets injured.

Simon Mignolet remains Alisson’s deputy but he has been very vocal about wanting more game time.

When he has played, he’s still not instilled much confidence. So with Mignolet looking to move on in the summer, Liverpool will need a replacement.

Then there’s also the situation with Loris Karius who’s future is very unclear. So what are the options?

Promote from within

Klopp could look towards two academy goalkeepers – Caoimhin Kelleher and Kamil Grabara. Both have good quality, however, they also lack experience.

Grabara is currently out on loan and is seen as the better of the two U23 stoppers.

Whether or not he can come in and be a willing deputy is the million dollar question.

Buy a new goalkeeper

If Mignolet leaves, Klopp could decide to buy an experienced keeper. There are numerous options across Europe, however, he may not need to look too far.

The likes of Alex McCarthy and Tom Heaton could come in and provide good backup.

McCarthy has been linked with a move to Liverpool in the past. While Heaton has only just regained his starting place in the Burnley team after a torrid time with injuries.

Depending on how Southampton’s season finishes and whether or not Heaton can keep his starting spot in goal could dictate what they both decide to do next and how Klopp may view them as potential backups.

Have your say

Decision time! Should Liverpool promote from within, should they go out into the market and purchase a backup for Alisson or should they keep Mignolet or bring back Karius?
