For the third consecutive year, Liverpool end the year on top of the Premier League table. It has been a hard fought season for The Reds thus far, having been plagued by injuries to some of their key players, even the optimistic of fans would probably not have foreseen Klopp’s red men sitting on top of the table after losing VVD, Gomez and Thiago for the long term.

Domestically, Liverpool have lost once all season, but have dropped points against sides like Newcastle, Brighton, Fulham, and West Brom in draws that could have lean in favor of the Reds if it wasn’t for injuries, or VAR who was once again the centre of attention in many matches this year. In Europe, the Reds made qualifying out of what could have been a tricky group, look easy. Topping their group with a game to spare, Liverpool now face RB Leipzig in the Champions League knockout stages.

Whilst it has been an enigmatic and unprecedented year in terms of world wide chaos, one thing remains the same, Liverpool are on top of the pile. Here at LFC Transfer Room we take a look back at the season so far, with writers answering five questions each, but please, let us know what your responses are too!

Merry Christmas, up the Reds, YNWA.

1- Perfomance of the season so far – why?

A- The matches against Crystal Palace, Atalanta and Leicester come to mind, but, I have to choose Wolves’ 4-0 thrashing by us at Anfield. To me, it was a performance of the champions. Young Caoimhin Kelleher marked his Premier League debut with a cleansheet against a capable Wolves side, with goals coming from everywhere. A header from a defender, a worldie and a half by a midfielder, a clinical strike by an attacker and forcing an own goal as well. A very complete performance, overall.

2- Player of the season so far – why?
A- Andrew Robertson. Although Mohamed Salah is enjoying his best start to a season in a Liverpool shirt, I am immensely impressed by Robertson’s massive improvement. He has strengthened in defence and attack alike, and his consistency this season has been a thing of wonder. Head and shoulders above any left back in the world so far this season.

3- Who would you sign in January – why?

A- Ideally, a good transfer window would consist of a backup forward and a defender to lessen the load on Fabinho and Joel Matip. Sevilla’s Jules Kounde or Leipzig’s Ibrahima Konate might just be enough for the defence department. Both are young and come with reasonable price tags. As for attack, my eyes are on Memphis Depay, who is available for a mere 5 million euros this winter window according to various reports.

4- Goal of the Season so far?
A- This has been a season of stupendous Liverpool hits, making it very hard to choose. However, I will go with Mohamed Salah’s second goal vs Crystal Palace’s very recent 0-7 demolition at Selhurst Park. A moment of magic from the Egyptian, the goal surely made us all reminiscent of Salah’s against Chelsea at Anfield in the 2018/19 Premier League season.

5- Player you’re most excited about in 2021? Why?

A- Curtis Jones. Young Harvey Elliot is having a convincing stint on loan at Blackburn this season but it is still Jones who I am still most excited for. Infact, it’s almost personal for me, who has been rooting for the scouser to succeed at Liverpool since his winning penalty in the 2019/20 Carabao Cup versus Arsenal. He has bulked up physically over the end of season break this year and has really stepped up his game, becoming better and better every time he steps on the field. Good on the ball, confident and not afraid to go forward, Jones is one to look out for.

Liverpool 2-1 Spurs because it was a really entertaining game that had skill, nutmegs, slick passes and of course great goals. Seeing Bobby score the winner late on and sprinting down the pitch to celebrate in front of the Kop rounded it all off!

2- Player of the season so far – why?

Salah. Goals, goals and more goals. He’s been the best player in the league for 3 seasons now and if you think otherwise you’re deluded.

3- Who would you sign in January – why?
Upamecano. He’s young, excellent defensively and can play smart passes forward.

4- Goal of the Season so far?
Diogo Jota’s second goal against Atalanta. What a touch to bring it down then smack!

5- Player you’re most excited about in 2021? Why?

Diogo Jota. He’s started his Liverpool career brilliantly and he can only get even better.

– Definitely the Crystal Palace game. Winning 7-0 isn’t easy, even if you’re playing a team with lower quality than yours. Beating Palace 7-0 after losing so many players, and after that Villa game, is a statement to the entire league saying “We are here, and we are coming for the trophy”. 8 shots on target, 7 goals. Absolute class from the team.

2- Player of the season so far – why?

– One of my personal favourites, Andrew Robertson. Apart from the Villa game, I can’t remember a single bad game from him this season. Absolutely crucial deliviring balls forward, being the second player with most assists since the start of 2018. Not only this, but when defending duty calls he almost always answers. Pure world class.

3- Who would you sign in January – why?

– I’ll say Ben White. My initial answer was Dayot Upamecano, but seeing as how any centre half that joins the team in January will most likely be benched as soon as Virgil and Gomez come back, I decided to change my answer. Upamecano, who starts week-in week-out for Leipzig including for Champions League games, will most likely ask for more game time than Ben White probably would. Regardless, any defender would be good.

4- Goal of the Season so far?
– Honestly, the Bobby Firmino goal against Spurs. Not so much because of how good it looked, but what that goal meant. At the time, Spurs seemed like the strongest contenders for the league. Walking away from that game would’ve been more than good enough for me, but grabbing all 3 right at the end of the game was absolutely amazing. Of course, it also gave Firmino a lot of confidence. After going through such a drought, it finally looks like Bobby found his feet once again thankfully!

5- Player you’re most excited about in 2021? Why?
– Thiago, definitely. I’ve been excited to see him play since we signed him, and having only featured in one and a half games so far, I can’t wait to see him back on the pitch. A player with such quality will only make us even stronger on the pitch and might just be the edge to help us win the title.

Leicester at home. Blew them away when they were giving it the biggun

2- Player of the season so far – why?
Andy Robertson. Unreal numbers, level with De Bruyne for assists and just keeps getting better. His delivery is outrageous he should be working for Just Eat

3- Who would you sign in January – why?
Wouldn’t sign anyone, don’t want to disrupt the delicate balance of the squad for what would be a vastly inflated fee

Probably Firmino against Spurs. Quality header, but the timing, the context, Mourinho’s face…had the fucking lot

5- Player you’re most excited about in 2021? Why?

Thiago coming back has got to be up there, cannot wait to see what he can do. And really enjoying seeing Curtis Jones develop as well.

1- Performance of the season so far – why?
Results wise, beating Spurs in the last minute; topped off with a bitter and salty Jose Mourinho at full time! Firmino needed a big goal for his confidence and he deservedly got one, which then set him up nicely for the goals he scored in 7-0 thumping of Palace the week after. Spurs haven’t won since, long may it continue…

2- Player of the season so far – why?
Mohammed, the King of Egypt, Salah. He seems to have the ability to find the net whenever he plays. He is breaking records all over the place and is now the most prolific forward in PL history, overtaking Thierry Henry’s record of contribution per game, with Salah standing at 0.97, Henry has 0.96. Golden boot number three incoming… Honourable mention to Fabinho who is playing at CB and not in his natural position but has channelled his inner Alessandro Nesta and looks like a solid brick wall at the back.

3- Who would you sign in January – why?

It’s a tricky question: we obviously need cover at CB, but if you bring in an Upamecano or Konate, whilst they will play until VVD and Gomez is back, what then? They won’t be happy to sit on the bench and not be first choice CBs (which they wouldn’t be), and then you have a player unhappy which could upset the balance of this tight knit squad. You could look at young CBs with potential, but then we already have one in Rhys Williams who has shown he is ready to play more first team football… it’s a conundrum. Ideally we would get in a reliable CB on loan until the end of the season, but again who is available I have no idea. Therefore, out of left field, I’m going with Sandro Tonali or Florentino Luis to fill in that 6 role should captain fantastic , Jordan Henderson ever need a rest. They’re young enough to be happy to sit on the bench and bide their time and learn from Henderson how to play that 6 role at Liverpool.

4- Goal of the Season so far?

For importance – Bobby Firmino vs Spurs for the reason I listed above.
For sheer aesthetics and wonder – Bobby Firmino’s first vs Palace – counter attacking football at its finest and killed the game off.

I like Bobby scoring goals.

5- Player you’re most excited about in 2021? Why?

Like the majority, Thiago. The man is a superstar and I can not wait to see him play regularly in the Liverpool red. It’s almost unfair on the rest of the Pl teams that we have Thiago to add back in to this side – he will prove to be a sensation. Jones has been immense and will only get better, which also excites me. Quick one on Naby Keita, if the lad stays fit, he is inexorable.
