Jurgen Klopp was coy on the absence of Alisson Becker, as he was out of the starting line-up to face Brighton at Anfield on Wednesday.

The Brazilian was ruled out through illness, although it wasn’t believed to be COVID-related.

As a result, young Irish shot-stopper Caoimhin Kelleher took his place between the sticks.

Alisson joins the evergrowing absentee list. Following the news of Joel Matip’s long term injury.

It now means Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane and Fabinho are all missing through injury.

Liverpool will be looking to start February better than they started January and carry on the form that saw them climb up the table thanks to two wins in London.

Klopp on Alisson

Speaking to Sky Sports prior to kick-off, the German head coach said: “Ali is ill, it is not COVID that’s positive as well thank God.

“Not seriously [ill], but no chance.”

He woke up this morning and was not feeling well so we couldn’t bring him.”

The absence of the 28-year-old means that the 22-year-old Irishman will play just his second Premier League game for Reds.

It’ll be just his fourth full 90 minutes to add to his current 360 minute tally in the league for the reigning champions.

Last time at the AMEX, a contentious last minute penalty on Danny Welbeck saw Pascal Groß fire past Alisson to cancel out Diogo Jota’s second half opener.

VAR took centre stage in the coast as Mohamed Salah saw his first-half strike ruled by the finest of margins as the dreaded lines came to the rescue of Graham Potter’s side.

Liverpool will be looking to continue their good run of form after wins over Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham.

A win for the Reds would see them jump into third after Leicester City eased past Fulham at Craven Cottage.

With City on the horizon, they will be just four points behind with a win.
