Liverpool succumbed to a sobering 2-0 defeat against arch rivals Everton, leaving a serious dent in their top four hopes. That loss also means that the Reds have lost four successive home league games for the first time since December 1923.
Speaking after the game, Jurgen Klopp gave his thoughts on their dire performance: “Most importantly we have to admit that they scored twice and we didn’t so that makes the result. Around their goals I think we created enough but we didn’t finish the situations off.”
We weren’t clinical.Klopp speaking to beIN SPORTS
Liverpool were poor right from the start. After only three minutes, James Rodriguez’ through ball was clinically dispatched by pantomime villain, Richarlison.
“It is (tough to take) but we conceded this early goal which was completely unnecessary and have to defend it better. We had to chase the game”Klopp speaking to BBC Sport
Liverpool looked slack and lacklustre for the remainder of the half, with Jordan Pickford smothering any opportunity the Reds had. To make things worse, Jordan Henderson seemed to suffer a groin injury, which further adds to Klopp’s defensive woes.
Despite an encouraging opening ten minutes, the second half proved just as frustrating. As has been the case recently, Liverpool dominated possession but were unable to create genuine chances. “[We did] well creative wise, we created some in the first half and even more in the second half but we did not finish our situations off.”
Despite being cramped into their own half, Everton struck the decisive blow in the 83rd minute. After a heavily contentious call from referee Chris Kavanagh, Gylfi Sigurdsson tucked away his penalty to hand the Toffees their first Anfield win this century.
Liverpool Manager on the Reds Form
This loss means Liverpool have now taken only seven points from a possible 27 so far in 2021. Klopp gave this thoughts on their dreadful run: “I cannot explain it really. We controlled the quality of the opponent well – but the one mistake we make they punish. They could make 10 mistakes but we didn’t punish.”
I think us being dominant in games is becoming a familiar story but the opponent [still scores].Klopp speaking to beIN SPORTS
Klopp on Everton’s Penalty
I did not see it back but the kind of questions I get asked about it gives me a feeling it could have been decided differently.Klopp speaking to BBC Sport
“If the VAR calls the referee to the screen then maybe he saw it slightly wrong. He did not need a second, he looked and went. If you think it was not a penalty then you have to say that, we cannot change it anymore.”
Klopp on the Latest Liverpool Injury
Jordan Henderson pulled up with a groin injury, forcing him off in the 30th minute. This now means Liverpool have six first team centre backs in the treatment room and an even worse defensive crisis on their hands.
Henderson getting injured is a tough one to take. We will go through this [injury] and in the end we will succeed.Klopp speaking to beIN SPORTS
Liverpool now have a weeklong rest until they face Sheffield United on 28th February. How detrimental will this defeat prove to be come the end of the season? Can Liverpool turn their league form around and make top four?
