Liverpool: Ryan Babel in Retrospect

It is hard to believe it has been 10 years since Ryan Babel’s infamous tweet of Howard Webb strutting his stuff in the colours of our neighbours down the M62. The former Liverpool star now plays for Turkish giants Galatasaray, scoring five goals in 19 appearances over the last 18 months.

Lets rewind to 2007 where a 20 year old Ryan Babel had just scored 7 goals in 27 Eredevise fixtures. 2007 saw Babel become a u21 European Champion and the fourth youngest Dutchman to score for the national side.

Babel was brought in by the Reds for a hefty £12million, becoming the clubs third most expensive signing.

Babel himself said that maybe he joined Liverpool too early and would of benefitted with some more time with Ajax.

However, after his first season there was no evidence to suggest this. 10 goals in 49 appearances for a 20-year-old left winger playing in two European competitions was a great return.

A memorable winner against Arsenal and a thunderbolt against Chelsea in the champions league were the highlights.

Babel’s Infamous Picture

Babel should have kicked from this, however, the wheels fell off. The Dutchman managed to add just 10 more goals in two years and was plagued with inconsistency for the rest of his Liverpool career.

One memorable goal, however, was the winner in the 2-1 victory over Manchester United. The memorable moments continued to be a thing with Babel.

The aforementioned Howard Webb photo and the now cult classic BabelCopter, which involved Ryan flying in a helicopter for transfer talks that never materialised. #BabelCopter walked so that tracking plane flightpaths could run.

Babel ultimately left Liverpool in January 2011 in a £8million move to TSG Hoffenheim. Babel has played for a plethora of clubs since; Ajax, Besiktas and most notoriously Fulham which managed to get the BabelCopter spinning again.

Babel also played against Liverpool for Fulham, scoring at craven cottage prior to James Milner’s penalty winner.

While playing for Fulham and Besiktas, Babel found himself in the Netherlands squad under Ronald Koeman. However at the age of 34, those days appear to be over.

Liverpool supporters remember Babel for a few important Liverpool goals. Unfortunately his Liverpool career was curtailed by a lack of consistency which ultimately ended his 3 and a half year Anfield stay.
