Arsenal and Shkrodran Mustafi have mutually agreed to terminate the defender’s contract. Normally this would mean nothing to Liverpool, but it has huge transfer implications.

The Reds want to sign Shalke defender Ozan Kabak, but were waiting to see if the German club would be able to find a replacement.

Liverpool Reignite Interest

With this contract termination agreed, Liverpool are that much closer to signing long-term target Ozan Kabak. The Turkish central defender was rumouored to be joining the Merseyside club in the summer but nothing materialized.

Fast forward a few months and Liverpool revive their interest due to an injury crisis. Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip are all out with significant injuries.

Schalke were put into a time crunch to find a replacement as the German transfer window closes at 5:00 PM while the UK window stays open for another seven hours.

Well known transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano stated that Arsenal have terminated Shkordan Mustafi’s contract. He also said that Schalke are set to sign Mustafi as a replacement for Anfield bound Ozan Kabak.

Liverpool are waiting for Schalke to finish up the last steps in order to complete the Kabak deal. This deal will see Kabak join the Reds on a short term loan with an option to buy once the loan finishes.

Michael Edwards seems to have struck gold again. The German club was playing hardball early on in negotiations and initially demanded an obligation to buy. However, the Liverpool Sporting Director was able to talk them down and get an option to buy.

The ball should start moving a little bit faster now. Look for an official announcement to come this evening. Liverpool should also expect to announce Preston defender Ben Davies today. Not one for Deadline Day movement, the club have been very active today.
