Liverpool are just one of the clubs linked Swiss international Denis Zakaria according to Kicker.
Like his teammate, Florian Neuhaus, the Geneva-born midfielder is another hot property in the Bundesliga.
The 24-year-old has reportedly turned down a contract extension at Borussia Monchengladbach, with his current one set to expire in 2022.
So who is Zakaria and what is his playing style like?
Born in Geneva, Zakaria began his footballing career at Servette before being swiped by Young Boys. In his two seasons in the top flight of Swiss football, he played 50 games before Borussia Monchengladbach signed him for a reported fee of 10 million euros.
He has since made 93 appearances for the German side and has been at the heart of their midfield and defence throughout.
However, the Switzerland international has a tendency to be injury prone. Last season, he missed the back end due to a knee injury which only saw he return in November of this season.
Since his comeback, he has played a key role in helping Gladbach qualify for the Round of 16 in the Champions League and will be key in beating Man City.
The 24-year-old is a defensive midfielder but also has the ability to play as a centre-back. He plays a similar role to that of Fabinho and has a similar stature, as he measures at 6ft 3in.
But the area where he excels over the Brazilian is his Fabinho at is his pace. The midfielder is one of the quickest players in the Gladbach team. Recent sprinting times have seen him clock 34.62 km/h quicker than that of Frenchman, Marcus Thuram, and fellow Swiss international, Breel Embolo.
As well as being defensively sound, Zakaria is also great on the ball and has a great passing range. This has drawn comparisons to that of Patrick Vieira and Paul Pogba. Due to their similarities defensively and with their ability on the ball as well.
His versatility is also one of Zakaria’s great traits. This season he has been played at the centre of a back three, in between Nico Elvedi and Matthias Ginter. This is mainly due to it helping him regain match fitness after his knee injury.
But it also worked in their favour, as if Ginter or Elvedi made a mistake, he could make up ground and remove the danger.
Would he fit at Liverpool?
The biggest draw to him is due to his versatility, something Liverpool often look for in their signings.
The fact he is able to play as a defensive midfielder, box-to-box or centre-back means he can fill in any issues that may occur, such as injury.
He would also help reduce the load of the Premier League champions current makeshift centre-back Fabinho and due to their similar qualities, you could argue he may become an even better player due to his pace.
With Liverpool looking for a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, Zakaria could be an option due to his ability to play anywhere.
He is the ideal type of player the six-time European Cup winners should sign due to talent and potential he possesses.
Although, his current contract does not contain a release clause.
