According to recent reports, Liverpool have thrown their hat in the ring for the Declan Rice sweepstakes.
Alongside Chelsea, Manchester City and a handful of Europe’s elite clubs, Liverpool have made their interest in the 22-year-old known to West Ham.
The Guardian claim that West Ham could sell the midfielder for £50 million during a “special summer sale”.
This comes as a surprise to many, as West Ham demanded £80 million for the Englishman just last summer.
With Chelsea being Rice’s boyhood club, the Blues have been painted as early favourites to get his signature this summer.
However, Chelsea are keen to play Rice in defence, which could prove to be a major roadblock in their pursuit of the defensive midfielder.
Could Rice Replace Gini at Liverpool?
Liverpool have registered their interest after reports that Gini Wijnaldum is set to leave Merseyside in the summer. After a long, drawn out contract fiasco, Liverpool finally look set to move on from the Dutch international.
Liverpool could do fare worse than Declan Rice when replacing Gini Wijnaldum.
The England national has an impressive 87.3% pass success rate and wins an average of 1.6 aerials per match. Gini Wijnaldum on the other hand, boasts a slightly higher pass success rate (91.5%) but a lower number of aerial duels won per match (1.2).
The West Ham midfielder also has more tackles per match (1.8) compared to Wijnaldum (0.9).
With Liverpool slowly becoming an aging team, the 22-year-old would be a welcomed addition. Although Jurgen Klopp denies it, many pundits have called for a squad refresh and Rice would be a cornerstone of this.
Will Declan Rice be wearing a Liverpool top come next season?
