According to The Athletic UK’s James Pearce, Liverpool said they would either loan out Minamino to Southampton or nobody at all.
When speaking on The Red Agenda podcast, James Pearce said that Klopp believes that Takumi Minamino still has a future at Liverpool.
Klopp is adamant that Taki still has a future at the club. The fact that Saints wanted the option to buy but it was instantly dismissed suggests that Klopp hasn’t given up on him and he thinks what he does need is regular first team football in Premier LeagueJames Pearce on the Red Agenda Podcast
Liverpool Only Wanted Southampton
The Athletic revealed that Liverpool were not willing to let Japanese international Takumi Minamino leave for anywhere besides Southampton.
The report went on to say that a lot of this was down to Southampton’s manager Ralph Hasshenhutl. Jurgen Klopp believes that Minamino will be familiar with Hasshenhutl’s methods and how the manager sets up his team, when to press, and where on the pitch he should be.
This expectation is present because Takumi Minamino and Ralph Hasenhuttl both come from the Red Bull set up. Minamino was brought to Liverpool from Red Bull Salzburg and Ralph Hasenhuttl managed Red Bull Leipzig.
Negotiations revealed that Southampton expect to play Minamino in the number 10 role behind the striker. However, Hasenhuttl is open to using him up front if need be.

The Premier League side also attempted to make a loan move for another Liverpool player. Southampton made a deadline day attempt to sign Liverpool’s Neco Williams. It is understood that this was a no start situation for Liverpool as Klopp wanted the young defender for depth.
