Former Dortmund defender and Jurgen Klopp favourite, Neven Subotic has been tipped to join Liverpool. The Serbian defender has been released by Turkish club Denizlispor after a total of just 5 appearances so far this season.
Liverpool have been short on central defenders after selling Dejan Lovren and opting not to bring in a replacement.
The club thought the squad could get away without a replacement. They believed that Fabinho would operate effectively as the fourth-choice centre-back and Billy Koumetio the fifth choice.
This decision turned out to be an absolute disaster. Liverpool have seen Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip face extended spells on the sidelines.
Although the 32 year-old defender may not be the most glamorous signing, it is one that makes sense after Liverpool’s Sokratis Papastathopoulos enquiry.
The two veteran defenders represent the same thing, a last ditch effort to fix a glaring weakness in the squad.
Liverpool Familiar With Subotic
Jurgen Klopp is picky with his signings and often requires a lengthy learning period before handing a player regular minutes.
Due to his familiarity with Subotic, the learning period could be avoided and the defender could slide right into the starting XI.
The two will no doubt have an understanding of expectations and scheme.
With the Greek defender signing with Olympiacos, the natural progression would be to follow up on Subotic’s release and availability.
Liverpool have been linked with several defenders that could be brought in this summer, but seem to be bargain shopping this month.
Liverpool could do much worse than Neven Subotic at the moment. Afterall, they are currently playing a midfielder and an academy player as their first choice centre-back tandom.
As the January window inches closer to slamming shut, more defenders will be linked with the club. However, it is not certain that Liverpool will make a move.
