Liverpool Latest: Diop & Brazilian Defender Linked

We are entering the final few days before Monday’s deadline. Liverpool need a defensive addition and the hours tick the rumours intensify.

During Thursday’s 3-1 win over Tottenham, Cameroon international Joel Matip was forced to sit out of the second half with an ankle injury.

Hours before kick-off, it became known that makeshift defender Fabinho would sit out of the trip to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium through a “muscle injury.”

As a result, for the second half, Nat Phillips accompanied Jordan Henderson.

Sunday’s trip to the London Stadium will mean the Reds will have no senior centre-backs for the game.

With the transfer slamming shut on Monday night, the race for Liverpool to make a list minute addition is hotting up.

Who have Liverpool been linked with?

Issa Diop

The Reds have been linked with one of Sunday’s opponents defensive options, Issa Diop.

This deal would make sense as due to the United Kingdom’s restrictions, any overseas addition would have to isolate for at least 10 days.

Multiple outlets have linked the Frenchman with a move.

Diop is a 24-year-old French under-21 international, he signed for the Hammers in 2018 from Toulouse for £22.5 million.

What are the reports?

The former Toulouse man has reportedly been contacted by the transfer committee after Liverpool initiated talks, according to Diop’s Footmercato, a news outlet native country.

Scouts at Anfield have followed him for several seasons, according to the report and it continues to say that David Moyes’ side wouldn’t be against letting him leave in January.

Story so far..

He missed four games this season through coronavirus between September and October, he has since played four games for West Ham featuring in 14% of their games this season.

He was on the bench during their 2-1 defeat at Anfield, earlier in the season.

Shkodran Mustafi

Arsenal outcast Mustafi has been linked with a switch to Anfield.

The deal could make sense as due to the United Kingdom’s restrictions, like with Issa Diop, any overseas addition would have to isolate for at least 10 days.

He has enjoyed a successful time in North London, amassing 150 appearances for Arsenal.

The World Cup winner signed in 2016 for a reported fee in excess of £35million from Valencia.

Prior to his time in Spain, he had spells in Italy – with Sampdoria – and England – with Liverpool’s city neighbours Everton.

Jurgen Klopp reportedly has genuine interest in his fellow countryman.

Although, the Standard have reported that representatives of Liverpool have yet to contact those in the capital.

Despite his contract expiring in six months, the London-based news outlet believe he will leave the Emirates this month if the right offer is presented.

He has just played three Premier League games for the Gunners this season.

However, he has predominantly featured in the Europa League under Mikel Arteta with a single appearance in the EFL Cup.

Aaron Long

Reports surfacing over the last 24 hours have suggested that Liverpool are interested with New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long.

The American is a 28-year-old full US Mens National Team international.

He is a two-time USL Champion and enjoyed a solid season in the MLS.

What are the reports?

Freelance reporter Kristian Sturt says Liverpool are looking to bring him to Anfield on loan, via ESPN.

On Friday, January 29th, ESPN reported that were eyeing the American on a temporary basis via multiple sources.

Furthermore, the Football Insider reported that in pursuing Long and the Liverpool Echo believe they may make use of their Red Bull contacts.

In the report, they say “Liverpool owners FSG have great respect for how Red Bull run their sporting franchise.”

Story So Far..

With the MLS season suspended till April, Long has yet to kick a ball in 2021 and has been made available on a three-month loan.

Last season, Long made 13 appearances scoring two goals as the New York Red Bulls endured a disappointing season, exiting the play-offs in the Round of 16.

Gleison Bremer

Liverpool have been monitoring the situation of the Torino centre-back Glenison Bremer.

Bremer is a 23-year-old Brazilian defender.

He signed for the Italian side in 2018 from Atlético Mineiro from his native Brazil.

What Is The Report?

The Athletic has reported that Liverpool have been monitoring the Brazilian defender.

However, there has been no official approach made by the Premier League champions.

The Story So Far..

He has played 75% of the Turin-based side, he is currently valued in the region of £6 million and has two-years left on his contract in Italy.

Scoring twice in 15 Serie A appearances, he scored the equaliser in Il Toro’s 1-1 draw with Hellas Verona.

He also started in their last night’s draw with Fiorentina which saw La Viola have two players sent off.

With the transfer window edging towards its conclusion, things are starting to heat up for the Reds.

Despite initial claims they wouldn’t delve into the market, consequences have forced Liverpool’s hand which sets up an interesting last few days of January.
