It is no secret that Liverpool are currently in desperate need of a top centre-back to not only cover Van Dijk & Joe Gomez’s absence, but also for the long term.
Liverpool will now continue their season with a midfielder at the back, and an injury prone Joel Matip who seems unlikely to stay fit for more than a month. LFCTR’ favorite Dayot Upamecano and his partner Ibrahima Konaté are reportedly on top of the Reds list for the summer.
We all know Jurgen Klopp loves a good deal, and RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano seems to be the perfect target that not only has the physical qualities that the German manager looks for, but also has a 37 million release clause that can be activated in the summer which ticks the financial aspect of the signing.
BILD & SPORT BILD Head of Football Christian Falk has recently confirmed that the Reds are one of many top Premier League sides that have held talks with the representatives of Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konaté.
It seems like most of the paths are clearing for a possible move from the Reds for any of the two centre-backs. RB Leipzig’s CEO Oliver Mintzlaff recently commented on the possibility of selling their top stars, and his claims basically admitted that they are willing to sell any of their players as long as the money was right, in Upamecano’s case, his full release clause (£37Million).
Mintzlaff: "We also have a very broad squad of quality. So we will also sell again if it makes financial sense and we can absorb it sportingly. When I think of Werner, Cunha, Keïta or Demme, we have already redeemed a lot and yet developed sportingly."— LFC Transfer Room (@LFCTransferRoom) January 10, 2021
But not everything is good in the horizon for the Reds when it comes to Dayot Upamecano. With Bayern Munich being reported as his main destination by many outlets, Klopp could also turn heads to his partner Konate who has a £45M release clause, a sum that is obviously higher than his French partner, but nonetheless reasonable for a player of his quality.Embed from Getty Images
One thing is certain, and that is that Klopp and co. won’t be going in for any of them in the January transfer window, with the manager claiming there won’t be any movement unless a real good opportunity comes up. If anything, fans should look forward to the upcoming Champions League fixture where Liverpool will face RB Leipzig on February 16th, a perfect opportunity for Klopp & Edwards to evaluate his targets, and see if they can cope with the intensity of the Premier League Champions and their stars.
The likes of Ezequiel Garay, and even a loan move for Eder Militao have been mentioned for the winter transfer window, although Liverpool will possibly be looking for a long term option, that can not only patch the current centre-back crisis, but also give the Reds a solid option for years to come.
