With one of Liverpool’s defenders already gone, could we see Joel Matip follow on Dejan Lovren’s steps and move away from Merseyside?
According to Cameroonian football news site Allez Les Lions (via KICK 442) , the France-based club is looking towards signing soon-to-be 29-year old defender Joel Matip, with PSG coach Thomas Tuchel and it’s Sporting Director Leonardo being both admirers of the German-born defender. Tuchel’s team is in search of a new defender, since their captain, Thiago Silva, looks to be on his way out of the club after his contract runs out at the end of this season.
Matip has enjoyed a four-year spell at Liverpool, having played 111 games throughout all competitions, with 43 of those being clean sheets. Even though his time at Liverpool has seen him pick up several injuries, when the defender has managed to stay fit he can be undoubtedly one of the League’s best. Seeing how he concedes a goal only every 141 minutes, the Cameroonian international seems like a good signing for the French team, but what would this mean for Liverpool?Embed from Getty Images
Already being down a defender, selling another one could turn out into quite a problem if Jurgen Klopp doesn’t manage to sign a replacement for both. With signings like Thiago and Jamal Lewis looking not so far fetched, signing two other defenders as well could be too much for the Reds. Another option would be to sign one defender and use the likes of Sepp van den Berg or any other youngster if needed.Embed from Getty Images
Having just signed a new contract last year, which runs out in 4 years’ time, a hefty fee could be asked for the defender. With TransferMarkt marking the Cameroonian’s value at €32M, a fee of around €40M could very well be the amount Jurgen Klopp would need in order to release the player, maybe even more since Matip is just starting to enter the prime years of his career.Embed from Getty Images
