Various reports and articles this week are hinting that global footballing superstar, Kylian Mbappe, could be heading for Liverpool in the summer.
Both AS and Fabrizio Romano have mentioned in the week that Liverpool are planning something interesting in the summer, and also mentions that Mbappe’s contract situation at PSG not seemingly moving towards a renewal.
Could a move to Merseyside be on the horizon for the most exciting youngster in the world, or is it all a pipe dream?
Diario AS, a Spanish sports news outlet, have claimed that ‘Liverpool are strong contenders to Real Madrid in the signing of Kylian Mbappe.
The Reds offer a perfect package with the most competitive league, a club with success, a manager that can get the best out of him and the main takeaway, Nike’s mutual deal.’
When breaking this down there isn’t too much you would disagree with, Liverpool are one of, if not the best team in the world, with the greatest manager in the planet, Jurgen Klopp.
Over the years we have seen Klopp develop the likes of Sadio Mane, Mo Salah, and Roberto Firmino as attacking threats and they are firmly cemented as Liverpool legends.
With a player like Mbappe, with such high potential, the thought of the Frenchman under Klopp’s tutelage is wild and unimaginable.
Developing attackers is Klopp’s forte; Lewandowski, Aubamayang, Salah, Mane, Firmino can attest to that, and Mbappe must know that he will be like an animal unleashed under Klopp’s guidance. He will find adoration on Merseyside by fans and player alike, he could be what he has always dreamed of being, the greatest player in the world.
For many fans (including myself) the thought of Liverpool coughing up the better of £180m+ is just unfathomable. As far as the contract goes, Mbappe is around €300k a week, but he has stated his wage demands would be less, in order to move to a club that can guarantee him success. It would certainly be a move we Liverpool fans have never witnessed before. Klopp and Edwards don’t tend to spend millions on talent, they would rather create their own.
But, we have seen Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson Becker come in for huge transfer fees before, and a Champions League title and Premier League title followed. The payoff is there for all to see. Signing a superstar like Mbappe would provide more success for many years to come given his age; mutually benefitting both parties who are ambitious for silverware.
What is interesting in itself though, is the mention of Nike’s deal with Liverpool. Nike’s partnership with The Reds means that Liverpool receives 20% of whatever merchandise is sold by LFC. A signing like Mbappe would see shirt sales and merchandise fly off the shelves and online stores like never before.
Kylian Mbappe is an icon, he is a brand who is ready to be commercialised and with the 20% deal, his astronomical transfer fee could well be paid off within the first few years in shirt sales alone, the rest towards his contract!
The impact on the wage bill is certainly something to consider; you would assume Mbappe would be the highest-paid player in the club, and I am not too sure Mane, Salah, Van Dijk, Alisson etc. would appreciate that, given they have already proven their worth for Liverpool.
The knock-on effect could mean that players are perhaps disgruntled and envious, causing higher paid contracts to be given as a result and an increase in wage structure; something FSG will be keen to avoid. I guess it depends on whether you can put a price tag on success?
‘REMEMBER THAT PSG SUFFERED FINANCIAL LOSSES THIS YEAR, WE’RE IN A COMPLICATED MOMENT, IT’S NOT EASY… BUT WE’RE TALKING DIRECTLY WITH MBAPPE AND NEYMAR.‘PSG Director Leonardo, in November 2020
Another tweet that has intensified the rumours is one from Fabrizio Romano when he stated ‘Liverpool don’t want to spend a lot of money in the January transfer window, they’re planning for something interesting next summer…’
Whilst this is certainly not linking the 22-year-old with a move to Merseyside, it does have fans wondering what the ‘interesting’ plan is?
FSG have backed Klopp at every move, they waited for Van Dijk when Klopp didn’t want to sign another centre-back, they splashed out for a record fee for a goalkeeper in Alisson, and this summer they brought in Thiago and Diogo Jota.
IF this transfer is something Klopp wants, he and Edwards usually work together to get it.
Then of course there is the friendship between minority stakes holder in Liverpool FC, Lebron James’ and Kylian Mbappe to further add fuel to the fire, but perhaps that is a stretch a little too far… even if it does give Liverpool an upper hand on the opposition who are all howling for Mbappe’s signature.
Either way, there is no sign of Kylian Mbappe signing a contract extension, and if it has not been signed by the summer, you would expect suitors to be enquiring for the exciting World Cup winner’s name on their team sheet.
PSG won’t want his contract to run out and him leave on a Bosman, they will have to cash in at some point.
On PSG, they have a new manager in Mauricio Pochettino, and his first task will undoubtedly be to convince his prized asset to stay and create history with the club. The Champions League is obviously the one Mbappe wants to win, but whether he believes he can do that with PSG and Pochettino, remains to be seen.
This transfer rumour is one that perhaps seems too good to be true, but the stars are aligning somewhat, and Klopp has turned Liverpool fans from doubters to believers once before… life is about believing in the impossible, to dare is to do; #Mbappe2021 anyone?
