Virgil van Dijk returned to Merseyside this past week as his rehabilitation from his anterior cruciate ligaments injury which he suffered in October.
Today, he has issued another update on Instagram going through the motions of his recovery work.
In the first half of the Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park, Everton’s Jordan Pickford’s late knee-high tackle on the Dutch central defender saw the Reds number four limp off.
At first glance, it looked like a bad tackle and as a result ruled the reliable defender out for the rest of the season.
Over the last few months, he has been continuing his recovery in the Far East in Dubai, at the Nad al Sheba Complex.
The Dutchman has been sorely missed this season as Jurgen Klopp’s defensive options have slowly found their way onto the AXA Training Centre treatment table.
Joining van Dijk, Joe Gomez, who suffered a ruptured patella tendon on international duty with England, and Joel Matip, out for the remainder of the season with ankle ligament damage, both of whom suffered season-ending injuries.
As a result, Liverpool have not only trusted their youth ranks through Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams but have been forced to delve into the January-February transfer window where Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak arrived at Anfield on a permanent and loan basis, respectively.
Seventeen centre-back pairing later, captain Jordan Henderson has saw his role in the squad move further back as he initially joined Fabinho as the other makeshift central defender before the Brazilian too suffered a muscle injury.
The reigning Premier League champions ended their 30-year wait to reclaim English top-flight glory, van Dijk was everpresent in the squad, scoring five as he played an integral part for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
There is still no exact timeframe on his return but post by post, it provides a positive boost in the return of the key Liverpool figure.
