With Georginio Wjinaldum’s free transfer to another club in the summer starting to look increasingly inevitable, Liverpool would no doubt be casting their eyes all over Europe (and outside as well!) for a Wjinaldum replacement.

It would turn out to be quite an endeavour, for midfielders with fitness levels as high as our Dutchman in the midfield are certainly not common. With the Merseryside club being linked with players all over the place, today we will put forward a short insight on a player which seems to be one of our best choices. A name which you have surely heard of by now. Can you guess who?

Yes! It’s Yves Bissouma!

Brighton’s Malian midfielder, Yves Bissouma had left Reds fans thoroughly impressed after Liverpool’s rather disappointing outing at the Amex this season.

Having a very wide range of skills (build-up play, defending, shooting, etc) the 24 year old always looks promising, on and off the ball. According to whoscored.com, his strengths and weaknesses are as follows:

Strengths
Tackling (very strong)
Long shots (strong)
Dribbling (strong)

Weaknesses
Discipline (weak)

Style of Play

His styles of play includes a tendency to do layoffs, and, as evident from the above information, he has an affinity to shoot from distance and dribble. He tends to commit tackles and give aways fouls as well. His only weakness is discipline, which, I am confident, may get rectified as soon as he falls under the care of Jurgen Klopp.

2020/2021 PL Statistics

In the 2020/21 Premier League so far, his defensive statistics stand at:

(All are adjusted to be per game)

Tackles– 3.1
Interceptions– 0.9
Blocks– 0.1
Fouls given away– 1.8
Clearances– 1.8
Dribbled past- 0.9

His offensive statistics are:

(All are adjusted to be per game)

Goals– 1
Assists– N/A
Key passes– 1.2
Fouls won– 0.9
Dispossessed– 1
Shots– 1.2
Dribbles– 1.7

Passing stats:

(All are adjusted to be per game)

Pass success rate– 86.3%
Long balls– 2.9
Passes– 48.3
Crosses– 0.1
Through balls– N/A

All of this in 1377 minutes in 16 league appearances, 1 of which he started as a defensive midfielder.

His discipline might not be the best (5 yellow cards and 1 red card in 16 appearances), but like I said, it is nothing which can’t be fixed.

Can He Replace Gini at Liverpool?

His statistics are quite similar to Wjinaldum in the Premier League this season. Both have played about the same amount of minutes (Bissouma’s 1377 minutes vs Wjinaldum’s 1352), almost the same amount of aerial duels won ( 1.3 vs 1.2), same amount of goals (both 1) even almost the same average match rating ( 6.86 for Bissouma, 6.66 for Wjinaldum).

Another statistic which might sound exciting. According to TransferMarkt, Bissouma has never missed out on a match in his career, something to be paid attention to. Wjinaldum’s biggest offering to his club is his availability, something Bissouma can give too. This season has proved again and again exactly how important fitness is, and Bissouma brings that to the table in abundance. So far, he looks like an ideal replacement for Wjinaldum IF the latter decides to not sign a new deal before the summer

Will Liverpool move for him?

The Brighton and Hove Albion footballer has caught eyes of not only Liverpool but a certain North London club as well. Arsenal too, as claimed by TalkSport, are keeping tabs on the combatative midfielder and would be ready to engage in a bid war with Liverpool when needed.

ESPN sources have revealed that Liverpool are closely following Bissouma, although no reliable Liverpool source, or renowned football transfer journalist, Fabrizio Romano, have let any word about him slip so far. Valued at around €13M according to TransferMarkt, this is a deal which might just about turn out to be an absolute cracker! Take note though, Brighton’s asking price for their star midfielder will certainly be higher than the mentioned price.

However, Liverpool are still waiting for Wjinaldum’s final decison, for they will only truly go after Bissouma if, and only if, Wjinaldum lets the club know that he would not be signing a new deal with the Premier League champions.
